8/00-present Research Assistant: Parent-Child Interaction

Supervisor: Kimberly Shipman, Ph.D.

Description: This study examined how children learn to regulate and express their emotions, and how children learn emotions from the family. A particular interest in the study is how at-risk families (i.e. domestic violent families and child abuse) cope with emotional situations. Duties included recruiting and interviewing participants and data organization and management. Data collection involved structured interviews, administering self-report measures to both children and adults, and behavioral observations of parent-child interaction tasks.

08/99-05/00 Research Assistant:

Supervisor: Michael Kernis, Ph.D.

Description: A study evaluating how threatened implicit and explicit self-esteem resulted in possible stereotyping of a targeted minority individual. Duties involved extensive literature reviews on past theories and studies on self-esteem and stereotyping, helping develop experimental stimuli, and adjusting methods and procedures. Responsibilities consisted of scheduling and managing participants, and data collection and entry.

Clinical Experience

07/00-08/00 Psychiatric Intern: Athens Regional Medical Center
Athens, GA
Supervisors: Craig Sturges, L.C.S.W. and Joan Jackson, Ph.D.

Description: This program allowed for undergraduate psychology majors to obtain first-hand experience in a psychiatric inpatient facility. Duties included meeting with staff members to discuss patient needs and current therapy and providing emotional support outside of therapy. Responsibilities involved participating in group therapy session, witnessing admissions procedures, individual therapy sessions, and marital therapy sessions.

06/99-08/99 Assistant Camp Director: Camp Discovery at the Bradley Center of St. Francis Hospital
Columbus, GA
Supervisors: Beverly Lyles and Lynne Taylor, M.Ed.

Description: This extensive two week; two session day camp is geared towards ADHD children aged 6-11 years, where they could interact with other children with similar problems, learn about ADHD (i.e. what it is, how it affects their behavior, and how to recognize possible problem situations). Duties prior to camp included preparation for the camp which involved learning about each child and their individual situations, obtaining materials for the camp, scheduling speakers for the Parent Workshop, organizing daily schedules and activities, and developing the point system/token economy. Responsibilities during camp consisted of acting as the main
liaison between the children and the staff members, managing daily schedules and activities, enacting a disciplinary system, and implementing the point system/token economy, and forming a professional yet friendly relationship with the campers as a positive role model. Other supplemental responsibilities were supervising the one full-time volunteer and varying part-time volunteers, interacting with parents, psychologists, and interns in several organizational meetings.
